چکیده

Since its inception, the blackboard paradigm has been viewed as particularly appropriate for parallel and distributed hardware architectures. Yet, the paradigm’s multiprocessing potential remains largely untapped. The availability of multiprocessing hardware and languages in conjunction with tools for building blackboard applications is sparking renewed interest in multiprocessing blackboard architectures. Multiprocessing can be introduced at a number of levels in the blackboard architecture, from low-level parallel coding techniques to concurrent execution of knowledge sources and control components. This chapter details the issues associated with these multiprocessing levels and presents three high-level design alternatives for parallel and distributed blackboard architectures. Each design is appropriate for a particular architectural and application environment, and we discuss the selection criteria for each design and issues associated with its implementation. The three designs are being implemented as extensions to the Generic Blackboard Development System (GBB).

Static Task Allocation in Distributed Systems Using Parallel Genetic Algorithm

Over the past two decades, PC speeds have increased from a few instructions per second to several million instructions per second. The tremendous speed of today's networks as well as the increasing need for high-performance systems has made researchers interested in parallel and distributed computing. The rapid growth of distributed systems has led to a variety of problems. Task allocation is a...

AN OPTIMAL FUZZY SLIDING MODE CONTROLLER DESIGN BASED ON PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION AND USING SCALAR SIGN FUNCTION

This paper addresses the problems caused by an inappropriate selection of sliding surface parameters in fuzzy sliding mode controllers via an optimization approach. In particular, the proposed method employs the parallel distributed compensator scheme to design the state feedback based control law. The controller gains are determined in offline mode via a linear quadratic regular. The particle ...

Expert Systems for Design: The Challenge for SWARM

The purpose of this paper is to identify the key requirements to develop SWARM, or any other agent-based system, as an expert system for engineering design. The paper first discusses a commonly used, agent-based, expert system for design, the blackboard system. There is no control component specified in the blackboard model; this is both its strength and its weakness. The main part of the paper...

Distributed Image Processing on a Blackboard System

Efficient approaches to computationally intensive image processing tasks are currently highly sought after. In this chapter we show how a blackboard paradigm, originally developed for collaborative problem solving, can be used as an efficient and effective vehicle for distributed computation. Through the design of dedicated intelligent agents, typical image processing algorithms can be applied ...

A distributed blackboard system for vision applications

This paper describes an implementation of a distributed parallel blackboard system that runs on a Meiko multitransputer system. The blackboard is split up amongst the transputers to allow for distributed local processing, yet the access of the blackboard is transparent to the user processes, irrespective of whether the data is local or remote. Multiple expert processes are invoked as processing...
